How can we help you?

Starting Uni

If you have just started college or university, you have probably faced or are facing new questions constantly, as you are exposed to new experiences, new situations and new people. University is an amazing opportunity to truly define who you want to be in life. You’re no longer under the wings of your parents or guardians, or at least not as much as before. You’re figuring out a lot about yourself, and about your purpose and calling in life. We hope AMiCUS is a community you can count on during this exciting period.

Ten Tips to Help You

Here are ten tips to help you make the most of your time at uni:

1.

Make friends and build
healthy relationships.

2.

Be honest about being a
Christian from the start.

3.

Study hard but make sure to
take breaks and rest.

4.

Ask, ask, ask. Don't keep
any questions or doubts inside.

5.

Make time for Jesus in
your daily schedule.

6.

Connect with a church and
join or start a small group ASAP.

7.

Focus on growing to become
who you want to be.

8.

Learn to say, "No, thanks."

9.

Get involved in uni life
(sports, activities, helping others).

10.

Spend wisely
(time, money, resources).

Hints, Tips and Ideas to Become a Student-Friendly Church
Going to university may mean moving to a new city for a student. This means they will need to look for a new faith community in their new destination. If that is the case, it is important that churches that are in university cities become student-friendly churches, so they welcome and help new students get settled.

Two moments are vital in the transition from home to university: the farewell from the student's home church and the welcome at the new university city church.

This brochure includes tips and ideas to help you be(come) a student-friendly church.

Science and technology are powerful, respected, and highly successful. They have immensely improved our standard of living — from houses, appliances, food, health, and recreation to methods of communication, transportation, and record keeping — leading some to believe that all of humanity’s problems can be solved by science. But can science aid in finding answers to philosophical questions about our origin and destiny and about our purpose for living? Can it solve the problems of war and mismanaged environments? Science has tried unsuccessfully and often in direct conflict with answers given in the Bible.

The most notable conflict is between the theory of evolution with its billions of years for the progressive development of life and the biblical account of the creation of life by God during a literal week a few thousand years ago. Does the success of science in other areas force us to conclude that scientific evidence for an evolutionary theory is irrefutable?

The Geoscience Research Institute, founded in 1958, was established to address this question by looking at the scientific evidence concerning origins. The Institute uses both science and revelation to study the question of origins because it considers the exclusive use of science as too narrow an approach. The Institute serves the Seventh-day Adventist church in two major areas: research and communication.

Be

We seek to aid students become the best human being they can be.

“For the believer wanting to know God’s will for her life, the first question to pose is not ‘What should I do?’ but ‘Who should I be?’” (Jen Wilkin)

Be a disciple of Jesus

Jesus was the best human being to ever exist; He is the role model to follow.

He gave us the key to organizing our priorities in life, “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well” (Matthew 6:33 NIV).

When we seek God first and foremost, we become people who are full of the fruit of the Spirit: “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control” (Galatians 5:22, 23 NLT).

So, be the best human you can be by regularly spending time with God in His word, in prayer and in nature.

Be a student of life

Students are by definition people who spend time learning more about a specific topic. While it may feel tempting as a student to only prepare to pass your exams, engage yourself in your studies in order to learn.

Learning is the most exciting when you approach it with curiosity and wonder. And these two qualities will give you the right motivation and attitude to approach life, even after your studies.

Be curious and live in wonder!

Be a healthy human being

Being is not just about surviving but about thriving. And we cannot thrive in an unhealthy body or mind.

Here are twelve areas to focus on healthwise, which you can remember using the acronym CELEBRATIONS (link):

  1. Make wise choices when it comes to your health.
  2. Take the time to exercise regularly.
  3. Keep yourself hydrated by drinking enough healthy liquids.
  4. Live in an environment that nurtures your health.
  5. Ground your life on sound belief that brings you love, hope and peace.
  6. Take the time to rest properly; you need to continually recharge to avoid burnout.
  7. Breathe in fresh air.
  8. Observe temperance, in other words, achieve balance in all areas of your life.
  9. Live your life with integrity.
  10. Face life with optimism.
  11. Fuel your life with the adequate nutrition.
  12. Surround yourself with commendable people who will give you social support.
